The Society of Jesus is a Roman Catholic religious order of priests and brothers popularly known as "The Jesuits." It was founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540 when Pope Paul III officially established the Jesuit Order. St. Ignatius was a Basque nobleman and soldier who found God in all things. Today the Jesuits, the largest religious order in the world, continue to serve the church through its diverse ministries.

Meet the Vocation Director, Fr. Jack Butler, SJ

Welcome to the vocation page of the New England Province of the Society of Jesus! As Director of Vocations, my role is to help you discern God's call to serve as a Jesuit priest or brother. I accompany candidates throughout the process of prayerful discernment that concludes with the formal application process and acceptance into the novitiate. I am eager to help you grow in your relationship with God so that you can come to know your deepest desires and hear more clearly God's invitation to serve.

The discernment process involves regular meetings with a spiritual director, a silent directed retreat, and monthly gatherings of candidates at the many Jesuit communities and apostolates in the New England area. I encourage you to explore the various sections of this vocations page. Check the upcoming events section for a listing of opportunities to learn more about Jesuit life, and to meet Jesuits who are eager to help you discern your call to serve the people of God.
