The Application Process

The formal application process is meant to be an experience of discernment through which the Society of Jesus and an applicant enter freely and honestly into a time of reflection, assessment and discovery. Through this process, the two strive with the help of the Holy Spirit to discover the will of God.

While they were students together in Paris, Ignatius Loyola helped young Francis Xavier discern his vocation. Window in St. Ignatius Church, Chestnut Hill, Mass.The application process usually takes 10-12 weeks. Since the novitiate entrance day is in late August, candidates usually apply during the spring months. The process includes the writing of a spiritual autobiography, submission of an extensive application form, academic transcripts, financial reports, letters of recommendation, a criminal history background check, medical examinations, psychological testing, and interviews with four Jesuits and one lay Ignatian partner.

After all the materials have been submitted to the Vocation Director, the completed application is read by the Jesuit Review Board which consists of the Vocation Director and four other Jesuits. The entire dossier is then given to the Provincial along with summaries of the proceedings and recommendations of the Review Board. The Provincial makes the final decision about admission of the candidate.
